The Mission of the Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School is to assist parents in their role as primary educators of their children by providing a classical liberal arts education grounded in the great works of Western Civilization and aimed at academic excellence, musical competence, and character formation.

Exciting News from the AKF High School Kitchen Team
Exciting new from the Abby Kelley Foster High School Kitchen Team....
In early September, Project Bread - The Walk for Hunger, offered a "Chefs in Schools Training Program". Abby Kelley Foster submitted an application and was notified that we were accepted into the program. On Friday, September 18, 2015, Guy Koppe, from Project Bread, came to our High School and introduced us to Chef Vanessa LaBranche. Chef Vanessa's goals are many ~ She will work with the AKFCS Kitchen Team to provide basic culinary training and introduce new recipes with the goal of serving nutritious meals that appeal to students / focus on basic culinary techniques / use of herbs and spices / utilize local ingredients from area farms / and introduce smart lunchroom techniques that positively impact students' food selections.
Chef Vanessa will work with our staff on Mondays and Fridays from October, 2015 to December, 2015, with possible extension to June, 2016. We will conduct taste testing's and then include the recipes on our menus.
Chef Vanessa is a graduate of The Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, Vanessa LaBranche's obsession with food was something that evolved over time. Born and raised in the inner city of Boston, with roots in New Orleans and Mississippi, she was taught by family and friends about soul food cooking. An avid cookbook reader, she explored other ethnic cuisines, which piqued her interest in how other cultures prepared food. Chef Vanessa, as her students call her, believes that anyone can be a great cook with patience and persistence. She is currently Project Bread's Chef Educator for a large, 400 student Head Start Program in Lynn operated by Lynn Economic Opportunity, Inc., (LEO). There she heads up Project Bread's Chefs in Head Start program and works with the LEO kitchen staff to refine their culinary skills and make the menu more culturally appropriate to the many Latino students enrolled. She also teaches the adults to cook traditional favorites in a health way on a budget. Her mission is to empower people of all ages and ethnicities to feel comfortable preparing dishes at home. Prior to this, Ms. LaBrache was a Chef Instructor for the Take Back the Kitchen program at Haley House Bakers & Café in Roxbury, teaching cooking classes and empowering students with hands-on culinary skills and health education.
We are very excited to work with Chef Vanessa and thrilled that Project Bread accepted Abby Kelley Foster Charter School into this program and our fingers are crossed that the program can continue through June, 2016!
