Elementary School English Language Arts Curriculum
Elementary students receive standards-based instruction through the use of Open Court and Guided Reading. Open Court is a core program that teaches phonics/word knowledge, reading, and writing in a whole-class setting. Students receive individualized reading instruction in small groups through Guided Reading. These groups are flexible and frequently adjusted based upon student achievement. The books used for Guided Reading are leveled according to the Fountas and Pinnell leveling system and are selected based on student interest and skill focus. Teachers use informal observation and the Developmental Reading Assessment 2 (DRA2) to create groups. The DRA2 assesses each student’s accuracy, expression, reading rate, and comprehension.
