Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School offers a classical liberal arts education. We believe our graduation requirements ensure the academic, artistic, and character-building experiences that reflect our commitment to this goal.

  • Students must pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Test as mandated by state law.
  • Class rank is determined by grade point average, based on final grades in all subjects for all students. Grades are weighted against two measures: frequency and difficulty.
  • Rank is based on all four years but is computed at the end of the sophomore year and after each semester of the junior and senior years.
  • A student failing a core subject must repeat the work in a program approved by the Principal/assistant principal .
  • Individualized academic plans may be developed through the office of the Superintendent.

At the beginning of each course, each teacher will provide a written explanation of course expectations, methods of evaluation, and the grading system. Assessments may include but are not limited to tests, quizzes, written assignments, projects, and labs. All students in the high school are graded quarterly.

Mid year and Final Exams
All exams are worth 10% of the final grade. Students should demonstrate their knowledge of their course on this exam. All exams contribute to the student’s final grade. Please note the exam results appear separately on the student report card and will be reported to the college. Students who are absent on the day of the exam will be given the opportunity to make up the exam.

Late Policy
Students are expected to turn in all assignments on the date that they are due. Academic consequences for late work vary according to type of assessment as follows:

  • Homework/Assignments: Seventy-five (75%) credit will be awarded for assignments turned in the next class day. No credit will be given for assignments turned in more than one day late. Three or more missed assignments results in a teacher detention.

 

  • Projects/Labs: Students are expected to turn in all projects/labs on the date that they are due. Projects/labs will be accepted late subject to the following academic consequences:
    • One day late – loss of 10 points
    • Two days late – loss of 20 points
    • Three days late – loss of 30 points
    • Four+ days late – no credit given (grade of 0)

Effort
Each student is encouraged to put forth his/her best effort at all times. Students will earn an effort grade in each class based on the following criteria:

  • Does the student consistently complete assignments in full and hand them in on time and to the best of his/her ability?
  • Does the student routinely come to class on time and with all required materials?
  • Does the student regularly participate in class discussions?

Honor Roll
Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School recognizes students that are excelling academically. High Honor Roll and Honor Roll will be indicated on report cards.
