Celebrating Kindness and Other Virtues
Character education is an integral part of the classical liberal arts-oriented mission of Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School. Character education is consistently woven into the curriculum through the school's "character words." Truth, honesty, perseverance, kindness, fairness, courage, respect, friendship, citizenship, and self-discipline are consistenly taught and reinforced in many ways.
Every Monday morning at AKF, a group of students is recognized for embodying the character word of the week. The students gather as a group, share snacks, and receive certificates marking their achievements. Marilyn Olson, Assistant Principal for Elementary Education, leads a discussion of that week's character word.
"These small recognition events are very important," said Dr. Cameron K. Dewar, Head of School. "As we strive to instill good character in our students, we must teach them that it is something to be valued, recognized, and celebrated. That is why we honor them each week. Students have become accustomed to receiving recognition for academic, athletic, and artistic achievements. We believe they should also be recognized for displaying good character."

As part of the AKF social studies curriculum, AKF Kindergarteners learn about "Community Helpers" - people working in professions dedicated to the service of others. During the Community Helpers segment, the Kindergarten faculty brings in police, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, mail carriers, and other professionals who serve others day in and day out.
Recently, Officers Jerry Condo and Brian Girardi of the Worcester Police Department visited the school. On another occasion, Ladder 6 of the Worcester Fire Department, manned by "Lieutenant Gary," "Fireman Bob," and "Fireman Brian" wowed the students with their ladder truck.
The students not only learn about the helping professions, they also learn important lessons about safety from the experts.
