A Message from Mr. C – Let’s Stay Connected!

Greetings AKFMS Community,

The Importance of PowerSchool and ClassDojo

Every week, we hear from parents or caregivers who are frustrated because they feel as if they are missing out on information from school. In almost every case, we find that the missing link is the connection with PowerSchool and/or ClassDojo. Without active accounts and updated contact information, parents will invariably miss out on important updates, invitations, and even urgent messages about goings on at school.

PowerSchool: This is the main portal through which many of the important school functions are communicated. In PowerSchool you can access grades, schedule, bus route information, etc. as well as receive update emails about school activities, functions, schedule changes, or day-to-day updates. If your contact information is not up to date, or your account is not active, you risk missing important communication from school. PowerSchool messages are automatically translated into the language selected by the user. If you need assistance getting your account in order, please contact Lilibeth in the main office.

ClassDojo: This is the tool that teachers use to share important classroom information, not only about the whole class, but about individual students. The ClassDojo interface has many useful features including the capacity for end-to-end texting between caretakers/parents and teachers. Teachers routinely share information about upcoming projects, assignments or assessments, along with due dates and other pertinent information. You can download the ClassDojo app on your phone or other electronic device and there is no need to use a paid subscription. ClassDojo messages are automatically translated into the language selected by the user. If you have questions about ClassDojo access, please reach out to your student’s classroom teacher for assistance. classdojo.com

Warmly,

Mr. C.

Decoding MCAS: How to Use Your Student’s Score Report

MCAS score reports are arriving in email inboxes, and if you’re like most parents, your first instinct might be to treat it like a report card—or worse, a final verdict on your child’s academic potential.

Take a deep breath! It’s important to remember that MCAS is simply a snapshot in time, not the whole picture. Just like one photograph doesn’t capture a child’s entire personality, one standardized test doesn’t show everything your student knows, how hard they work, or how bright their future is.

Instead of seeing the MCAS report as a final grade, think of it as a handy tool for your parenting toolkit. Here are a few ways you can put that data to good use at home:

  • Celebrate Growth: Look at where your student has made progress since last year. Growth, be it big or small, deserves a high five! Recognizing their effort builds confidence for the year ahead.

  • Spot Opportunities: Use the breakdown of topics to see where your child shines and where they might appreciate a little extra support. It makes targeting homework time or finding a tutor much easier when you know exactly which areas need attention.

  • Set Fun Family Goals: Turn the results into a positive motivator! You can work together to set a small, reachable goal for this school year—like reading 20 minutes a day or practicing math facts—and tie it to a family reward, like a pizza night or a trip to get ice cream.

  • Partner with Teachers: Use the report as a conversation starter for parent-teacher conferences. Asking "How can we support this specific skill at home?" keeps everyone on the same team.

At the end of the day, MCAS is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Paired with everyday classroom work, teacher feedback, and your own intuition as a parent, you have everything you need to help your student thrive this year.

Cool Clubs and Activities

After school clubs and activities start next week. Just in case your student did not grab a sign up sheet, HERE IS A LINK.

Some of the clubs being offered this year include:

  • Monday Clubs:

    • Coding Club
    • Game Club

    • Stronger Together SEL Club

    • Creative Writing Club

  • Wednesday Clubs
  • Art Club

  • Math Club 6th & 7th grade

  • Dungeons & Dragons Club

  • 4th & 5th Grade Chorus Club

Thursday Clubs:

AKF Bear Bulletin

From the Principal's Den

Dear AKF Families,

This week, our students and staff participated in our first ALICE safety drill of the school year. As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment, we practiced classroom procedures designed to help everyone respond calmly and appropriately during an emergency.

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. It is a safety framework that helps schools prepare for potential emergencies by teaching staff and students age-appropriate strategies to recognize a threat, follow directions, and make safe decisions. Our practice this week focused on securing classroom doors and understanding how to make our classrooms safer spaces during a potential emergency.

We approach these drills thoughtfully and in developmentally appropriate ways, recognizing that our youngest learners need clear, reassuring directions and opportunities to practice routines. Our goal is to build familiarity and confidence without creating unnecessary fear or anxiety.

At Abby Kelley, student safety is always our highest priority. Just as we practice fire drills and other safety procedures, practicing ALICE procedures helps us prepare for situations we hope never occur. These opportunities also allow our staff to strengthen their understanding of our safety protocols and ensure we are working together to protect our students.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust as we work to provide a school environment where every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn. We are grateful for our AKF community and the shared responsibility we have in caring for one another.

Warmly,

Anne

  • Label Your Uniforms and Belongings

Our little Bears are busy playing, learning, and exploring each day, and sometimes sweaters, jackets, water bottles, and other belongings get left behind on the playground or around the school!

Our staff diligently collects these items and places them in our Lost and Found. However, without a student’s name, it can be difficult to reunite lost items with their owners.

Please take a moment to label all items your child brings to school, including coats, sweatshirts, hats, lunchboxes, and water bottles. A simple name label makes a big difference in helping us return belongings to their rightful owners!

Meeting Every Learner Where They Are

We recognize that every child’s learning journey is unique. Part of our work as educators is identifying each student’s needs in the moment and providing individualized support that helps them build essential skills and successfully access grade-level learning.

Recently, a student worked on letter recognition and matching through a hands-on activity designed to strengthen her ability to identify letters that are often tricky for young learners, such as b, d, p, and q. After receiving directions and guidance, she completed the activity independently—and did a wonderful job!

Through daily one-to-one instruction and small-group learning, our educators create opportunities for students to practice, build confidence, and develop greater independence. Our paraprofessionals bring valuable educational backgrounds and skills to this work, allowing us to provide responsive, individualized instruction while supporting students’ participation in classroom learning.

    Art Fundraiser

Our young artists are hard at work creating their very own Art to Remember masterpieces! Each student is turning their creativity and imagination into a special piece of art that families can treasure for years to come.

    🖍️ What’s Next?

    • November 2: Personalized order forms will be sent home with your child.

    • December 14: Orders are expected to arrive—just in time to make wonderful holiday gifts!

❤️ Your Purchase Makes a Difference!

When you order a keepsake featuring your child’s artwork, you’re doing more than celebrating their creativity. Our school receives 25% of the profit, helping support our AKF community!

We can’t wait for you to see the amazing creations our students are making. Keep an eye out for those order forms in November!

    AKF Bear Bulletin

    From the Principal's Den

    Dear AKF Families,

This week I had the pleasure of covering some classes as well as serving as a recess monitor. It was such a blast seeing kids this week! On one such occasion, a friend did not share their ball with another friend, and the other friend responded by hitting the ball away. What followed was a moment of big feelings—tears, frustration, and a little bit of disagreement about what should happen next. And you know what? That is part of growing up.

Our children are learning much more than academics during the school day. They are learning how to be a friend, how to take turns, how to compromise, how to ask for what they need, and—perhaps most importantly—how to navigate the moments when things don’t go the way they hoped.

Social play is one of the most important places for children to practice these skills. Sometimes you get the ball first. Sometimes someone else gets a turn. Sometimes a friend says "no." Sometimes the game doesn’t go the way you planned. Sometimes you feel angry, disappointed, or left out.

And sometimes, you don’t get your way.

Those moments can bring very big feelings. We want our children to know that their feelings are always okay, but that not every feeling gets to decide what happens next. Crying, yelling, or becoming upset doesn’t mean that a child is "bad," but it also doesn’t mean they automatically get what they want. Instead, these moments give us an opportunity to teach children what to do with those feelings.

At AKF, we are working to help our students develop the skills to pause, breathe, use their words, seek help when needed, problem-solve, and try again. We want them to learn that they can feel disappointed and still be kind. They can feel angry and still make a safe choice. They can hear "no" and recover. They can lose a game, miss a turn, or have a friend make a different choice—and know that they are capable of handling it.

These are big skills for little people!

So, the next time your child comes home with a story about a friend who didn’t share, someone who wouldn’t let them join a game, or a moment when things simply didn’t go their way, remember that these little moments are actually big opportunities for growth.

We don’t need to make every disappointment disappear for our children. Instead, we can stand beside them, acknowledge their feelings, and help them build the skills to move through them.

At AKF, we aren’t just helping children learn how to read, write, and solve problems. We are helping them learn how to navigate this wonderful, sometimes tricky, world with kindness, confidence, resilience, and care for others.

    Warmly,
    Anne Duke

Announcement From AKFCS Board of Trustees

    Dear AKF School Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce that the Board has voted to appoint Acting Executive Director Grace Howard-Donlin to the role of Interim Executive Director effective October 1, through the 2026–2027 academic year.

We wish to express our deepest gratitude to Mrs. Howard-Donlin for stepping into this critical leadership role during a pivotal time of transition. From guiding the District through the opening of school and navigating key personnel changes, to overseeing the rollout of new curriculum and structural enhancements in Special Education, Mrs. Howard-Donlin has ensured that our school remains focused on achieving our goals, under the Board’s guidance. The Board will continue to put measures in place for her ongoing leadership success as she continues to serve our District in the Interim Executive Director role.

Special thanks are also due to Trustee Greenwood and Trustee Vernon for volunteering their time and expertise to help guide Mrs. Howard-Donlin and the Board through the Acting Executive Director administrative process.

As a Board and community, we remain steadfast in our work to center the needs of every student we serve. We hold high expectations and cultivate an academic and character culture uniquely identifiable to our school—one where students feel actively supported and inspired in their learning journeys. That is also true for our faculty, and the school’s administrative team.

In alignment with our mission and vision, and following transparent, thoughtful, and meaningful discussion, the Board of Trustees voted to engage a search firm to collaborate with us in the search for a permanent Executive Director, whose term will begin next summer, before the 2027-2028 academic year. Grace Howard-Donlin will also be a candidate for the permanent Executive Director position and will participate in the search process alongside other qualified candidates.

Our core objective throughout this search process is to be open, equitable, and clear. As part of this commitment, we are forming an Internal Search Committee, which will be composed of the AKF community: Trustees, Administrators, Parents, Faculty and Students

Our work truly involves every part of our school community. If you are interested in serving on the Executive Director Search Committee, information about how to participate will be communicated soon.

In closing, we want to extend another heartfelt thank you to Grace Howard-Donlin for her leadership and to offer our sincere gratitude to our Trustees, faculty, staff, and families for your unwavering dedication, collaboration, and support as we move forward together.

The Worcester charter school ranks 25th in Massachusetts and 557th nationally, while several other Worcester County schools also landed among the state’s stronger performers

    BY

    Charlene Arsenault

Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School emerged as Worcester’s strongest performer in the latest U.S. News & World Report’s high school rankings, placing 25th among public high schools in Massachusetts and 557th nationally.

The Worcester charter school also ranked second among high schools in the Worcester metropolitan area and 111th nationally among charter high schools, according to U.S. News’s 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings.

Charter schools such as Abby Kelley are included in the overall public high school rankings because they are publicly funded. U.S. News then separately ranks charter schools as a subset of the broader public-school list.

Abby Kelley earned an overall score of 96.9 out of 100 in the rankings. U.S. News reported a 100% graduation rate, with 68% of students taking at least one International Baccalaureate exam and 56% passing at least one.

The school also posted proficiency rates of 64% in mathematics, 75% in reading and 65% in science.

“We are so proud of the dedication our staff and students bring every day,” Acting Executive Director Grace Howard-Donlin said in a statement. “This ranking simply reflects what our community knows—AKFCS is an outstanding choice for families across Central Massachusetts.”

Howard-Donlin credited the school’s academic expectations and staff for the result.

Abby Kelley is the only Worcester school to place among Massachusetts’ top 25 public high schools in the new rankings. Other strong performers from Worcester County include schools in communities such as Westborough, Shrewsbury and Northborough, although their precise 2026-27 positions vary across the state and metro listings.

The rankings cover more than 27,000 public high schools nationwide, with nearly 18,000 receiving numerical rankings. U.S. News evaluates schools using six weighted measures: college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate.

College readiness carries the greatest weight, at 30%, followed by state assessment proficiency and state assessment performance at 20% each. Underserved student performance, curriculum breadth and graduation rate each account for 10%.

The rankings rely heavily on 2023-24 academic-year data, including state assessments, graduation rates and Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate participation and performance.

U.S. News said schools scoring highest were those whose students performed above expectations on state assessments, participated successfully in college-level coursework and graduated at high rates.

Abby Kelley’s strongest showing came in graduation rate, where it tied for first nationally and statewide with a 100% rate. The school also ranked seventh in Massachusetts for state assessment performance.

Its college readiness index was 59.2 out of 100, placing it 50th in Massachusetts in that category.

The school serves 321 students in grades 9 through 12 and has an 11-to-1 student-teacher ratio, according to U.S. News.

Abby Kelley has offered the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for more than a decade. The school said the program is designed to expose students to rigorous coursework while encouraging global awareness and independent learning.

The school, founded in 1998, serves students from kindergarten through grade 12 and is named for Worcester abolitionist and women’s rights activist Abby Kelley Foster.

Massachusetts as a whole performed strongly in the new rankings. U.S. News reported that the state had the largest share of high schools in the top 25% nationally, at 47%, ahead of New Jersey and Maryland.

Boston Latin School ranked first in Massachusetts and 44th nationally, according to the published state results.
